A t-shirt illustration I did for someone who’s been a client, co-worker, mentor and friend to me over the years. One of the smartest and empathetic people I have ever known. I leveraged his love of marathon running and his heritage.
Sometimes when folks inspire you, you make time to show your gratitude (and have a little fun along the way).
Did this up for Robbinsdale Cooper High School Band. A friend of mine who is the band director needed a design in short order.
Green was chosen for the tee color since Washington is the Evergreen State. Seattle is known as the Emerald City, and lord knows I could have had some fun with that concept. Unfortunately, that fact almost seems like trivia, so few would get the idea of Dorothy headed for the Space Needle.
Teachers in general can usually use a hand and I thought of of Aaron Draplin‘s motto “Work hard and do good work for good people.” This director is good people to be sure. Just hope the kids like their shirts and have a great time. What a city.
Did a series of logo concepts for a local sommelier. Not just visuals but identities as well. This was my favorite. Simple, playful, with a hand illustrated style.
For a while my boys really enjoyed watching the Clone Wars episode with the Zillo Beast, a Godzilla/King Kong archetype. I decided to see if I could do a quick pen sketch by memory for the boys. Well, I got kind of close anyway.
So now it’s hanging in their room. What kid doesn’t like a giant rampaging monster that you can empathize with?
The Westside Trombone Quartet had their most successful Fall concert yet. This was the poster I put together for it. Art Deco / Oscar influenced. Used the Quartet’s colors.
In hindsight, creating a more authentic Art Deco experience and simplifying things may have been a better path. Nonethless, I was fairly pleased with the results and received good comments on the poster.
As for the concert itself, musically, monetarily and attendance-wise, things went very well. It was great to hear from people who had never been to one of concerts say things like “I never knew trombones could sound like that!” The instrument really does have more breadth and depth than most folks realize.

A friend and colleague asked about a t-shirt design for himself and his friends. They were going to attend a beer festival in the next month and wanted to be able to show off some new tees. Seems there was a private joke among them. “What if there was a bar in Prarie du Sac called The Sac Tap?”
This was an interesting challenge I chose to take up. The result is the exercise in subtlety you see before you.

I’m reminded that I need to start working on a poster for an upcoming concert. One of my music groups, the Westside Trombone Quartet has a concert. The theme is A Night at the Opera.
This was last year’s poster for our Myths & Legends concert. We performed a four movement piece of the same name by Eric Ewazen, among other selections.
We love ‘em. We crave ‘em in the summer and at baseball games. We just don’t like to think about what’s in ‘em.
